The Sea Dragon Expedition

In 1939, Halliburton, attempting to sail a Chinese junk the Sea Dragon across the Pacific Ocean from Hong Kong to the International Exposition in San Francisco, headed into a typhoon and, with his crew, was never seen again. A future book to be entitled The Royal Road to Romance in America would feature details of the Pacific crossing, itself intended as a symbolic act linking Asia and the Americas. Climactic rather than anti-climactic, the tragic grandeur of this, his last exploit, drew the curtain on a beautiful life, one committed to daring adventure. The ideal of world peace through cultural diplomacy and cooperation which the Sea Dragon expedition represented remains imperishable.

The Sea Dragon in Quotation

“Tomorrow and Saturday you will see a vividly painted junk named the “Sea Dragon” moored to pier No. 1 Kowloon. This colorful vessel with its terra-cotta, white and orange sails is due to put to sea Sunday morning, six-thirty o’clock, bound across the Pacific Ocean. Keelung, Midway, Honolulu and the Lagoon of the Trade Winds at the San Francisco Fair is the course and final destination.”

“Hello and Goodbye”

“Unknown to a world preparing for war, the Sea Dragon and its crew, with some new members to replace old, quietly sailed off. A few people were on the deck to wave it good-bye, as they might have done were it any ship. To a few of its crew members, the fanfare that had bade godspeed to its first departure (aborted as the result of poor weather and injuries on board) echoed eerily. As it passed them in the harbor, fishing boats and other junks indifferently glided by. .. “

The Sea Dragon 2 Expedition

In 2014 our team will launch the Sea Dragon 2 Expedition . By sailing a replica of the Sea Dragon, the Sea Dragon 2, from Hong Kong to San Francisco, the Expedition will complete Richard Halliburton’s failed attempt to cross the Pacific. Notably, the year 2014 will mark the 75th anniversary celebration of the opening in 1939 of the Golden Gate International Exposition, known also as San Francisco World’s Fair. While it heralded global peace, the fair also showcased a main theme of international commerce and cultural diversity, with special emphasis on the contributions by the many countries and islands touching the Pacific Ocean.

Members of our team have appeared on radio and in public to share the Halliburton story and, as Halliburton himself recommended, to share with others the merits of well-informed travel abroad programs. In seminars, we have addressed educators, librarians, independent scholars, and members of the business community. We have campaigned for a United States postage stamp to commemorate Richard Halliburton. Funding to support the documentary film series, republication of the Marvels books, and Sea Dragon 2 Expedition, continues to be an on-going pursuit. We welcome input from sponsors who appreciate how travel, linked to a passion for learning, can help young adults make intelligent decisions and confront the formidable challenges of a technologically advanced modern world.
